THE VERDICT

They say all good things must come to an end, but that doesn't seem to be the case for The Punters Club in Fitzroy as it returns to its roots after two long decades.

The grungy corner pub—once Bimbo Deluxe then Kewpie—has reinstated its original name and music venue ethos under new ownership.

On the food front, it’s old-fashioned pub fare with a refreshing zing and distinct Melbourne flair. Thinking South Melbourne dimmies for starters, a kangaroo schnitty with mash for mains, and a croissant and butter pudding with Pidapipo gelato to finish.

The bevs menu is tidy with all the usual suspects making an appearance. Get wine by the glass from the tap or bottle, or by the half-litre carafe. And for a frothy pour, go the house brew (Punters Draught) by the pot, schooner or pint.

It’s leaning into late 80s/early 90s era with the interiors, complete with dart boards, an old-school jukebox, and a solid pool room. However, the main character moment resides for The Punters Stage where all the music action takes place. To celebrate this momentous reopening, the crew have lined up a hefty roster of talent for spring—everyone from The Rookies, Milo Eastwood, and Black Jesus Experience are playing a free gig.
