THE VERDICT
Melbourne is known for its institutions, and this one sticks out like a sore thumb— but in a great way.
Smack-bang in the heart of Chinatown you can find a huge authentic slice of Germany—Hofbräuhaus, bringing the city traditional beers and hearty feeds for more than 55 years.
Recently gaining the hot-new culinary duo, this oldie-but-a-goldie is set for great things, with executive chef Sunny Gilbert (ex-MoVida Next Door) alongside head chef Kristin Gonzales whipping up some German delicacies.
Of course, the atmosphere is rowdy and the beers are constantly flowing, you can expect long wooden tables, packed side by side, in true German beer hall style.
The menu is crafted with Southern Germany in mind, featuring classics like crumbed-to-order schnitzel made from chicken, veal, pork or cauliflower, and paired with simple sides, which of course include potato.
Plus pork knuckle, currywurst, and flammkuchen are also on offer, and some Apfelstrudel with spiced rum and vanilla bean for a sweet end to your evening.
Hofbräuhaus boasts an impressive selection of German beers, handpicked by Philipp to spotlight family and state-owned breweries, expect unique brews like the legendary Eisbock, and there’s lots more thirst-quenching liquids on offer.
This venue hosts the perfect spot for European ex-pats and Melburnians alike, to experience some German antics, in the middle of Melbourne’s Chinatown.
