Maido is a Surry Hills cafe by the stylish teams behind Surry Hills businesses Provider Store (one of our favourite gift shops in Sydney) and Artificer Coffee.

In a bright space on Fitzroy Street, it’s fitted out with Japanese lanterns, delicately flapping noren-style textiles on the ceiling, and antique Japanese bits and bobs for a minimal but cosy atmosphere that could be straight outta Kyoto. Your visit might even include an appearance from the resident Shiba Inu (and important team member) Pocari.

Pull up a seat at the large, laptop-friendly communal table or in the street-facing window seats to enjoy a matcha latte using ceremonial-grade A.M. Matcha sourced from Kyushu in Japan’s southwest, or coffee made to the exacting standards of Artificer.

Small snacks and sweets by Newtown's Comeco Foods are also on the counter, like sweet potato brownies.

In addition to the cafe offering, Maido is also Provider’s production facility for their hand-poured candles, so you can watch the magic happen while sipping your matcha and browse a selection of candles to take home—and then bring back to be refilled.

For now, Maido is positioned as a pop-up that’ll be around for a few months, so get in while you can.
