When the mercury drops it becomes the official season of country road trips and steaming hot pies. So, it goes without saying that the Southern Highlands annual month-long pie festival is an absolute no-brainer.
Dubbed Pie Time, this annual celebration of Australia’s pie capital (in our humble opinion), coincides with National Pie Day (name a more Aussie holiday, we’ll wait), and, is all about loading up on the good stuff and getting around stacks of pie antics you won’t find any other time of the year.
If you’re keen to hit an all-encompassing pie road trip, you’ll have a few staple bakeries, breweries, pubs, and shops to hit that will be churning out their very own hero pie for the entire month of June:
Baked In Berrima—Vegan pie
Gumnut Patisserie—Massaman curry beef pie
Heatherbrae’s Pies—Alpine pie with slow-cooked venison stewed in mulled wine and apple cider
Robertson Pie Shop—Lemon pepper chicken
Samuel Gee Pies & Pastries—Yabby pie in a white wine sauce
Sonoma Bakery Bowral—Beef and beer pie with diced beef cheek, onion, celery, carrot, and Young Henrys beer
Southern Highlands Brewing Taphouse—Kangaroo and mushroom dark ale pie
The Magpie Cafe—Chicken and leek pie
The Whey Cafe—Becca’s Apple Pie with spiced cinnamon apple pie with Wensleydale cheese
On top of the dedicated pie specials, the Southern Highlands is set to be privy to a bunch of very important pie events. For example, there’ll be a number of “Pies & Pinot” dinners set across a heap of venues, which hero the region’s signature cool climate Pinot alongside its tasty pies.
For those with a sweet tooth, “Sweety Pie & Bubbles” will be the dessert pie equivalent. You’ll also be able to hop on pie tours and “pie-cycle” tours hosted by Schmokin’, a riders cafe in Berrima that will give you a two-hour electric bike hire and their signature pie.
There’s also The Great Southern Pie Drive, where you can cruise around the villages of The Southern Highlands, filling up on as many meat pies as you can handle. And if that wasn’t all enough, “pie teas” will be a very present affair happening at Peppers Manor House and The Old Bank Boutique Hotel with log fires, tea, and sweet and savoury pies.
Pie Time is kicking off June 1 and will continue until June 30. For more information, head here.
