Calling all culture-seekers, fashion-lovers and appreciators of incredible art—we’ve found the coolest exhibit of the year, and it’s taking place exclusively in Brisbane. Iris van Herpen: Sculpting the Senses, has landed at the Gallery Of Modern Art (GOMA) and it’s jaw-droppingly good, so there’s never been a better time to book a sneaky getaway to our northern neighbour.
A true style icon and pioneer of haute couture, van Herpen’s other-worldly creations forever changed the face of fashion—and now you have the chance to witness her brilliance IRL at this one-of-a-kind exhibition.
Not familiar with the queen of innovation? Her pieces have been worn by the likes of Rihanna, Lady Gaga and Beyoncé (she created the custom Heliosphere dress for Bey’s Renaissance World Tour), with her thought-provoking designs seamlessly merging art and design with science, sustainability and tech.
A deeply immersive sensory experience, the exhibit—which comes directly from Paris—will see visitors step inside the Dutch fashion designer's magical mind, showing the evolution of sketch to wearable art. As you meander through the exhibit, soundtracked by a dreamy new soundscape from artist Salvador Breed, you’ll get the chance to marvel at 100 incredible pieces from van Herpen’s mind-blowing collection of garments, headwear and footwear.
Alongside van Herpen’s garments, there'll be shadow projections by Canadian media artist Philip Beesley, an explosion drawing by Chinese artist Cai Guo-Qiang, colourful photographic abstractions by Kim Keever, a kinetic artwork featuring 300 gold seed pods by Casey Curran, and two immersive installations by the Japanese art collective Mé—and so much more.
Transcending the boundaries of fashion, don’t miss your chance to see the enchanting talent of Iris van Herpen up close. From boutique hotels and chic wine bars to hatted restaurants, start planning your culture-soaked vacay to Brisbane now.
Iris van Herpen: Sculpting the Senses is available to explore only at the Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA) in Brisbane from now until 7 October 2024. Sticking around for a long weekend? Head along after-hours for a night of beats, bites and bevs at GOMA Friday Nights.
