It’s time to whip out the mozzie repellent, because your fave pop-up cinema is back with another season of non-stop movie hits—this time, kicking off earlier than usual.
As the first of several program announcements, Rooftop Movies will be loud and proud atop the Roe Street Car Park from Tuesday 8 October with a string of Halloween flicks to kick spooky season. No doubt, there'll be a ton more cult faves and big shiny new blockbusters to get around—perfect for a cheeky mid-week date night or an early Christmas catch up with your crew—but for now, here are some of our top picks from the Rooftop Movies first release program.
What To Watch
First up, it’s gotta be Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. What better way to watch Jenna Ortega step into her Beetlejuice era alongside Hollywood heavyweights Winona Ryder, Michael Keaton, and Catherine O’Hara, than on the rooftop big screen.
We’re also itching to see Zoë Kravitz’s cinematic masterpiece, Blink Twice starring Channing Tatum, that follows a group of friends navigating mysteries on a tropical island in whodunnit fashion. Plus, the highly anticipated Joker 2.0 with none other than Lady Gaga alongside Joaquin Pheonix is high on our list (yes, the trailer still lives in our heads rent free).
All aboard the nostalgia train and pencil in screenings for 10 Things I Hate About You, The Shining, Rocky Horror Picture Show, and tons more.
Now let’s talk about prices. Beanbags go for $23 a ticket, deckchairs are also $23 and seated at the back of the cinema, while the primo lounge beanbag situation is $36 for two—which not only gives you a cosy spot to cuddle up on but includes a large popcorn to share, free blanket hire, and snacks delivered straight to your seat in true VIP style.
What To Eat
Benedict’s Burgerbuns is back with their hefty rooftop burgs with menu names we can’t get enough of. Ranging from $12 up to $19, all bases are covered with The Crisp Hensworth (fried chicken, no less), the beefy Matthew Meatconaughey, The Vegan Fox, and several others. If you’re not in the mood for a whole meal, the team also do a range of snacky bits like mozzarella sticks and chips laden with gravy.
On the drinks front, we’re particularly loving the cocktails by Idle Hands, with the Limonata Spritz taking the cake. You can go by the glass or if you’ve rounded up a crew, you’ll probably save a few bucks with a bottle to share.
We probably don’t need to tell you about the candy bar—it’s essentially a given for any great movie theater. Popcorn is scooped into small and large boxes, savory chips are in abundance, and you’ve got all the usual suspects on the chocolate front.
Things To Do
Now for the things to do that are slightly left of field, but all taking place under the banner of Rooftop Movies—and of course involve films. First up is Hobby Club. The first iteration will be embroidery focused, run by local legends House Of Hobby. Pick up your cross-stitch kit on the night ($35), settle in, and get stitching with Suddenly 30 (13 Going On 30) running on the big screen. The lights will be kept to a dim so you can see what you’re doing, and if this exact hobby isn’t your thing, stress less—you can BYO your own craft for the session.
There’s also the promise of rooftop yoga and rooftop dance parties, so keep your eyes peeled for the latest deets when they get announced.
