If you haven’t heard of it, Supernormal is a bit of a Melbourne institution. Headed up by hospo legend Andrew McConnell, the popular eatery is reminiscent of a buzzing Asian dining hall, with a lobster roll on the menu that has a cult following. And now, it’s joining the growing list of southern venues and chefs heading our way, landing at the base of the mega new riverfront tower at 443 Queen Street.
For those that are familiar with the Melbourne spot, don’t expect a copy and paste venue here, because Supernormal Brisbane has been created with South East Queensland’s climate, landscape and local produce in mind. Perched at riverside level, floor-to-ceiling windows offer views of the Story Bridge, a view that’s reflected in mirrored panels along the banquette-lined back wall—so you can see it no matter where you’re sitting. As for the decor, design studio ACME, who are behind three of McConnell’s other venues, have layered panelled timbers, rattan detailing and raw concrete columns to create a sleek but relaxed space that feels almost tropical, but with a little Melbourne edge.
Similarly, while the menu shares DNA with Supernormal Melbourne menu, and features some signature dishes like the spiced and twice cooked half crispy duck and those lobster rolls we mentioned, here you’ll have a whole new line up inspired by South East Queensland to sample. Think claypot sticky pork rib dumplings, baked abalone pastries, Szechuan and yellow chilli poached Moreton Bay bugs and sour and salty crispy lamb, just to name a few. It’s all designed for sharing, so grab a crew and pile the table with dishes.
As for the drinks, they’re starting off strong with a 400-strong list of thoughtfully curated wines that lean into family-owned producers. Cocktails meanwhile, come classic or bold and tiki-inspired, perfect for Brisbane’s subtropical temperatures. Bookings just opened for their official opening on Tuesday 23 July, so get in quick.
