Just when you thought Netflix was about to run out of the goods—after all, we well and truly binged the crap out of its entire suite of programs in 2020—it’s come through with a new movie, and it’s a straight up piece of art.

Created, shot and produced during the pandemic, Malcom & Marie boasts a truly superstar trio—teaming writer and director Sam Levinson up with Zendaya and BlacKkKlansman’s John David Washington for an achingly romantic drama. Honestly, it’s a match made in movie heaven.

The flick, which is filmed entirely in black and white, follows a filmmaker (Washington) and his girlfriend (Zendaya) as they return home following a celebratory movie premiere as he awaits what’s sure to be imminent critical and financial success. The evening suddenly takes a turn as revelations about their relationships begin to surface, testing the strength of their love.

Working with cinematographer Marcell Rev, Levinson creates a film of rare originality; an ode to the great Hollywood romances as well as a heartfelt expression of faith in the medium's future. It’s already garnering Oscar buzz for Levison as well as Zendaya and Washington (we mean, what else do you expect from Denzal Washington’s first born?).

If you’re really craving that cinema experience, Malcolm & Marie will air at selected cinemas this month but it will drop on Netflix for your viewing pleasure on 5 February.

Until then, binge your way through Netflix’s best movies.
