Pizza at a restaurant in Maylands

Next time the inevitable questions of ‘what are we having for dinner?’ arises, we recommend a meander along the river to Maylands. Often overlooked in favour of its super-stylish neighbour Mount Lawley, Maylands is Perth/Boorloo’s not-so-sleepy suburb and an Urban List favourite.

Thanks to rapid gentrification, the ever-evolving area is home to a generous number of kid-friendly, pet-friendly and sesh-friendly bars and restaurants, including some of the West’s best-kept gastronomic secrets. For a meal to remember, check out the below list of the very best bars and restaurants in Maylands.

Volare

From the cool kids at Northbridge’s Neon Palms is Volare, Mayland’s aperitivo bar that we just can’t get enough of. With zingy cocktails, savoury small bites, more substantial plates, knowledgeable staff and exceptional service, it’s the special sort of neighbourhood joint that’ll have you returning time and time again. Take a seat in the shabby-chic Art Deco-style space and work your way through the huge drinks list starting with our personal favourite: the Sour Mando, Volare’s perfectly balanced take on the classic made with mandarin vermouth, orange bitters, and Tanqueray Gin.

Seasonal Brewing Co.

Seasonal Brewing Co. is a hop-lovers heaven. Inside the huge 300-seat dog-friendly venue, there’s 18 taps pouring specially-crafted beers. A play area and child-friendly menu caters to kids, while a dedicated vegetarian and vegan menu providing a generous amount of veg-heavy dishes amongst the elevated pub classics. Oh and they've also been known to do a mean Sunday roast here too. Our suggestion: pick up a paddle from the bar and do a DIY tasting of the ice-cold frothies while deciding what to eat.

Rossonero

Venture a little deeper down the back streets of Maylands and you’ll find Rossonero, a BYO pizzeria well worth hunting down. This firm favourite has been dishing up blistered woodfired pizzas in the converted warehouse since 2017, but these are not the kind of pies you’ll find in Naples. Instead, feast on cheekily named and topped pizzas such as the Sticky Pig (a salty-sweet disk of bacon, potato, feta, apple, mozzarella, thyme and butterscotch sauce), Pear Grills (pancetta, pear, gorgonzola, caramelised onions, mozzarella and balsamic glaze) and Honey Boy (hot sopressa, grape tomatoes, mozzarella, chilli, chilli infused honey, fresh basil and parmesan on a tomato base). Stretchy pants encouraged.

Brixton Yard

In addition to the towering burgers, there’s a huge range of beer-friendly bites, classic cocktails, coffees and wines on offer. Pop in on a sunny afternoon for a cold one in the kid-friendly and pup-friendly courtyard, or swing by on a Friday to check out the live music and make the most of the generous happy hour.

For some old-school Italian carb loading, Amore Mio has you covered. Translating to ‘My Love’ in Italian, this classic diner has an enormous range of pizzas, calzones and pastas that you’ll fall head over heels with. Make sure you leave just enough room for the tiramisu della casa—Amore Mio’s creamy, caffeinated dessert from a tried-and-tested family recipe.

Another Lyric Lane icon is its eponymous restaurant, bar and underground live music venue. On the ground floor, Lyric’s is dishing up an extensive menu of light snacks and meat-heavy mains, with plenty of vegan, gluten-free and dairy-free options scattered throughout. Grab a cocktail at the adjoining Lyric’s Bar before venturing downstairs to Lyric’s Underground. Here, catch a show in the award-winning space, with some of Perth’s top talent taking to the stage up to five times a week.
