Auckland crew listen up! In some hugely exciting news, it’s been revealed that Ponsonby has (finally) scored a cinema complex all of its own for the first time in more than 50 years, and it’s of the luxury boutique variety that we absolutely stan.
Two years after opening the first Silky Otter in Ōrākei Bay Village, the decadent cinema experience has finally arrived in the heart of Ponsonby and to say we’re excited would be an understatement. A large part of the ground floor in the new area of Ponsonby Central is now home to a four-screen luxury boutique cinema complex.
While it remains to be seen whether they’ll be bringing their Monday bottomless popcorn night to this location (fingers crossed!), you can absolutely expect the same top-notch food and local wines and beer (and hopefully they’ll be scooping Lewis Road Creamery here too) all brought to your luxe leather recliner during the film.
“The success of our Ōrākei site has shown that there is still an appetite for the big screen in Aotearoa,” says Silky Otter CEO Neil Lambert. “People want that immersive experience, an independent cinema that delivers the best of mainstream, arthouse and film festival content, and crucially, comfort.”
And the rest of the country needn't miss out with a Silky Otter opening in Wigram, Christchurch this month and Richmond, Nelson this coming summer.
