Toddy Shop
THE VERDICT
After many culinary residencies (Fitzroy’s Rochester Hotel, Avani Winery and more), Keralan cuisine chef Mischa Tropp has secured his first permanent venue on Collingwood’s Smith Street—Toddy Shop by Marthanden Hotel.
Taking inspiration from traditional Toddy Shops in South India, this 20-seat hangout will redefine Indian cuisine, doubling as a bar with an extensive cocktail and wine list, as Indian disco records spin.
The menu is bolstered by Mischa’s tried and tested Keralan dishes—like the famed Fish Nadan (a Kerala Curry) from his residency at Fitzroy’s Rochester Hotel. His signature Ghee Masala Dosa (South Indian-style crepe) will reign supreme, along with other rotating specials like beef fry and a pork curry heavily spiced with black pepper and green chilli.
The drinks menu has been dialled up with curated wines and spirits from local South Asian-Australian producers such as Avani Wines, Lethbridge and Dutch Rules Gin, as well as carefully selected cocktails to rival the food.
Formerly home to Mono XO, the newly-renovated space will open Friday 1 December, welcoming walk-ins for an affordable yet elevated South Indian lunch or dinner.
