If you needed another sign that Mermaid Beach, or Nobby Beach to us locals, is the rising star of the Southern Gold Coast’s burgeoning culinary scene, the opening of Sunkist Eatery could be it.
With championing local produce, meat and seafood at its core, Sunkist Eatery is The Oxley 1823’s new breakfast and lunch destination that you need to get acquainted with. Open daily from 6am, Sunkist knows not to change a good thing and stars breakfast and lunch classics that you know and love.
Start your day with chilli scrambled eggs, avocado on toast and the Butcher’s Big Breakfast, or meander your way to the lunch menu loaded with dishes like chicken parmigiana, fish tacos and grilled Moreton Bay bugs. It wouldn’t be a Gold Coast eatery without acai bowls, and the Sunkist team have outdone themselves, serving acai bowls from 6am until 3pm every day.
From 3:30pm on Wednesday to Sunday, Sunkist transforms into it's after-dark alter ego—a gourmet fish and chippery serving local, sustainably line-caught fish. Renowned for its minimal environmental impact, line-catching fish is not only sustainable but guarantees a commitment to high quality.
The prime fish is supplied by Mermaid locals, Veitch & Sons Seafood Co., who have a strong ethos of keeping it local, simple and premium with no imports, wholesalers or middlemen involved. Pair your catch of the day with a tipple—this gourmet fish and chippery is just a little bit boozy, so you can sit under the Australian native trees with a top-tier vino in hand while you dig into premium seafood.
Our top picks? The menu star is the mixed grill, with local fish of the day, a Moreton Bay bug, Mooloolaba prawn and grilled octopus with rice and Greek salad. If you can't decide, keep it simple and go for the classic fish and chips. It's simple yet it's damn delicous.
