Some people like to judge their breakfast spots on the way the eggs are poached; soft, runny, orange centres surrounded by silky balls of white are a pretty solid indicator that your tastebuds are in good hands. And that’s fair enough.
I, however, am more inclined to seek out a slightly less common favourite - the corn fritter. You won’t find them on every brekky menu and, often, when you do, they are not that flash. So, when you find a good one, boy is it exciting.
Happily, both the eggs and the corn fritters at Pawpaw in Woolloongabba are excellent. My fritters, in particular, were lovely, and accompanied by a delicious chipotle mayo (seriously, it is insanely good), which gave an unexpected, but not unwelcome, kick. And the rest of the menu is just as good.
Bored with the standard bacon and eggs? Get your mouth around the unashamedly decadent Croque Monsieur or the Californian Breakfast Burrito. Or, for the truly intrepid diner, there’s the Black Pudding with Jalapeno Jam.
The new offering from the team behind The ‘Gabba institution, Green Papaya, is quickly gathering a following. Boasting an extensive all-day breakfast and lunch menu, excellent Campos coffee, and a quirky feel, Pawpaw is a rising star.
Fitted out with retro-inspired décor with a distinctly tropical feel – think palm trees on the walls and tiny bowls of goldfish all around – and with big bay windows overlooking Potts Street, there is a freshness to Pawpaw which is, well, refreshing. Add to that excellent, friendly service and generous portions, and it’s no wonder the locals are congregating.
