Winter Essentials: The Statement Jacket
By Elspeth Nielson | Posted in Prime Finds | 20 April 2012 7:03AM
I am like a bowerbird when it comes to jackets: I incessantly collect anything shiny or eye catching season after season. Show me embellished, tweed, beaded, lurex, motorcycle, printed, neon or velvet... Chances are I’ll snatch them up.
The beauty of the statement jacket is that it allows the wearer to build a wardrobe of key rotational pieces around it. Easy to wear staples will go from basic to chic with the simple addition of a fabulously well-cut piece of outerwear.
Whether you’re prim and pretty, a biker girl, or the queen of fluro, this season offers up quite the smorgasbord of trends to choose from. Investing in one of these little lovelies will make your wardrobe smile. You’ll be surprised how often you’ll reach for it.

Electrify drab winter wardrobes with a zing of neon. Keep the rest of your ensemble semi tonal to avoid any garish situations arising.
Raquel Allegra ($995) from Calexico | Zambesi ($685) from Camargue

There is something innately chic about a tweed blazer. Opt for frayed finishes, metallic glints and a slightly padded shoulder for a more relaxed take on the traditional tweed jacket.
Kinga Mathe ($695) from Kisses | Theyskens' Theory Jacket from Samantha Ogilvie

After a few seasons on the benches, the blazer makes a triumphant return to the fray. Opt for luxe embossed fabrics, velvets and monochrome patterns that will pack a punch. The bomber jacket dominated the FW 2012 runways in February, cementing itself as a sure favourite of the style set. The perfect trans seasonal wardrobe pick; opt for one with a high-sheen finish that can be thrown over just about anything to give it an instant sport luxe edge.
Scanlan & Theodore | Designer Remix ($360) from Kisses Boutique

Add a little shine to your look. Day or night, the lurex jacket is a firm style staple, perfect for lifting a jeans and ballet flats combo to lofty new heights.
Haute Hippie ($750) from Calexico | By Malene Birger ($639) from Kisses

The trusty leather biker returns yet again this season as the ultimate winter style staple. Update this classic with elements of quilting, or by snatching one up in a bold primary colour.
