Music on a Monday: New Manic Spree

Adam Gerrard has been hot on the live music trail this month, giving us the heads up on two great gigs – Pond and Chet Faker at Alhambra – and now New Manic Spree at Tempo Hotel on Brunswick Street in Fortitude Valley.

If you're searching for something you can shake a fist to, then the prog-leaning rock and roll stylings of Brisbane band, New Manic Spree will satisfy your urges.

Sounding like a mix of early Silverchair and Soulwax (before they put down their guitars), these talented local musicians have had two of their songs from their first EP – Hollywoods and Galaxies – receive regular airplay on Triple J. They’re now gearing up to release their new single, Sangria, at the Tempo Hotel

(You can watch the video for Hollywoods and Galaxies and listen to three tracks from their EP on the New Manic Spree Facebook page.)

New Manic Spree celebrated the release of their EP last year with a riotous party at The Zoo – over 300 people crammed in the room complete with a mosh pit and numerous stage divers. I expect the gig at The Tempo to incite the same kind of revelry.

Apparently, this may be a bit of Brisbane swan song for the band, for a while at least, as the band plans to quit their day jobs and move to Melbourne at the end of the year to try their luck in the thriving music scene down there.

So you heard it here – make sure you check them out at an intimate home town show before they make it big in Melbourne and the rest of the world!

When: Saturday 28th April
Where: New Manic Spree at The Tempo Hotel on Brunswick Street in Fortitude Valley
