March: This Month In Live Music
By Adam Gerrard | Posted in Mix Master | 2 March 2012 12:42PM
From The Urban List Team: Good news! It's time for a new playlist, March: This Month In Live Music, highlighting four bands playing gigs in Brisbane this month. The Black Lips, St. Vincent, Real Estate and The Otchkies are all jetting in to town to play various Valley venues. See what our music editor, Adam, has to say about their tunes, and look right to stream a playlist of their tracks. Live music love...
Black Lips | The Zoo
To say that Black Lips would kick off the month with a blaring, messy, sweat-soaked bang would be an understatement - in a good way. I have never seen them live before, but by all accounts around the traps on the internet they don't mind the odd stage dive or mild riot. A friend of mine who attended their Laneway Festival 2010 show told me she was disgusted at their on-stage antics - namely their penchant for swapping sweat and saliva (whether it be through direct contact or aerial propulsion). So yes, the Black Lips live show is not for everyone. However! If you like your tunes to taste a little like the beach, a little psychedelic and a little like sweat, it could be one of the funnest gigs you ever attend. They are touring in support of their excellent2011 album Arabia Mountain which includes a song about having a bad acid-trip at the Louvre called Modern Art (listen through the 8tracks widget below).
When: 11pm - 12am Friday 2nd March
Where: The Zoo | 711 Ann St in Fortitude Valley
St. Vincent | The Hi-Fi
To extrapolate St. Vincent's (real name Annie Clark) appearance to try and predict what her music would sound like would be a grave mistake. From her album covers, she looks like a porcelain doll that loves to bake cupcakes, skip and singKumbaya around a campfire. Regretfully, my shallow mind's first exposure to St. Vincent was the cover of her 2009 album Actor (pictured below) and I expected her music to sound exactly like what she looks like. But I was pleasantly surprised after I gave her latest album Strange Mercy a spin. I was so impressed by how much her music impressed me that I had to look her up on YouTube. What I found there made me fall in love with her - she's actually a bad-ass rock chick! Watch her innovative style of guitar shredding in the video at the bottom and come see her do it live at The Hi-Fi!
When: Doors open 7:30pm Saturday March 10th
Where: The Hi-Fi |125 Boundary St in West End
Real Estate | The Zoo
These guys' latest album Days was the soundtrack of my summer. Whenever I needed something to play for everyone while we were cooking a barbecue, driving to the beach or just hanging out, this album always suited the mood. You may have heard the über catchy single It's Real on Triple J, but the best way to enjoy their music is to put the album on from start to finish and wonder how fast the time went by. You can listen to album highlights Green Aisles and Out Of Tune in the 8tracks widget. Don't miss this perfect mid-week opportunity to reminisce on your summer holidays, even if you weren't listening to Real Estate!
When: Doors open 7:30pm Tuesday March 13th
Where: The Zoo | 711 Ann St in Fortitude Valley
The Otchkies | Woodland
One of the most exciting new bands to come out of the Northern Rivers Shire in NSW is psychedelic surf-rock band The Otchkies. Only forming a year ago, but already packing out shows around Brisbane, the Gold Coast and Byron, these local boys are sure to be making waves in no time. Their music is full of hallmarks of classic rock 'n' roll - catchy surf-riffs, extended instrumental freak outs, reverb-heavy vocals, and vintage organs - which makes them damn fun to dance to! With their first EP release drawing near on the horizon, make sure you get down and catch them before they explode onto everyone's radar.
When: Doors Open 7:30pm Friday, March 30th
Where: Woodland | Coniston Lane off Mclachlan Street in Fortitude Valley
Well they're my picks of the month for live music. I hope to see you out and about supporting musicians and local venues alike!
