Five Cool Things from One Cool Girl

Johanna Bear is a new face in the Brisbane fashion scene. A young model with fine features, porcelain skin, languid fragile limbs, a smattering of freckles and mesmerizing, innocent eyes. We have a sneaking suspicion she won’t be long for our golden shores, Johanna has Paris stamped all over her porcelain, freckly face. (You saw it here first! Just call me Sarah Doukas…)

Johanna is studying Law and Art History, and despite her child-like, dreamy, waif-esque persona, she seems to know more about the arts, music and Brisbane’s underground groove than anyone I know. She discovered The Middle East years ago at a quiet weeknight gig when she was but a wee high school lass… Surely teenagers aren’t that cool! If we didn’t like her so much, we would be tempted to hate her.

Introducing the five things that are inspiring one of Brisbane’s sweetest cool cats at this very minute:

1. ‘Green Velvet’ smoothie from Flamingo.
Who would have thought that avocado and banana could taste good together? The folk at Flamingo café have achieved the seemingly impossible with this delicious velvety drink.

2. ‘The Otchkies’ live at Woodland
With Barbarella visuals, psychedelic projections of bubbling liquid, and audience members dancing wildly with incense and tambourines, ‘The Otchkies’ certainly know how to create an experience that takes their ‘60s sound to a whole new level.

3. Chunky tribal jewellery  (One of Johanna's favourite images is in the gallery above. We have spied some amazing chunky tribal pieces at our favourite online jewellery boutique, Molten Store).

4. ‘Surrealism: the Poetry of Dreams’ at GoMa
Not only were the artworks unmissable, I also loved the activities in the kids’ section. It was the perfect outlet for channeling your wacky creative urges after seeing such a wild exhibition. Did I care that I was mostly surrounded by screaming 5 year olds and impatient mothers? No Sir.

5. ‘On the Road’ by Jack Kerouac
This book inspired me to be fearless, travel, embark on wild adventures, reconsider materialism and make the most of every moment.
