Bringing Back The Muffin

And we’re officially bringing back the muffin… No ifs, no buts.

Unlike scrunchies, MC Hammer pants and other faux pas of the decade, the muffin is one remnant of the 90’s that taste did not forget. Sadly, the noughties gave this sweet (or savoury) gem a bit of a bad rap thanks to the very unattractive slang, ‘muffin top’. For the uninitiated, I am referring to the overhang of fat spilling over the waistline (quite likely a result of overindulging in said muffins).

While I agree the thought of sporting a ‘muffin top’ is certainly reason to exercise caution when indulging in this baked deliciousness, the mouth-watering muffin is enjoying something of a renaissance. And I, for one, am throwing my weight behind this worthy cause!

To break down the barricade between you and the muffin, I have put together a list of Brisbane’s best muffin haunts. Let me hear you say ‘Mmmmmm’…

Jocelyn’s Provisions
Good ol’ Jocelyn’s may seem to surface on The Urban List baked goods front a little too often, but can you blame us? Baking muffins with whatever ingredients they have on hand, you’re always in for a (pleasant) surprise. Think pear, plum, apple, cinnamon and coconut, all rolled into one ball of goodness; definitely more fruit than muffin.

Where: Shop 8 at Centro on James Street in Fortitude Valley

Pearl Café
Pearl’s muffins take the cake. With their amazing pastry chef up and baking before the break of dawn, there’s always something delightful perched up on the front counter waiting to be snapped up. Serving up raspberry, apple and cinnamon crumble, and even the odd savoury muffin, they’re best straight out of the oven with a cup of joe.

Coaldrakes
A bookshop may be an unlikely place to find a good quality muffin, but Coaldrakes at Emporium puts paid to that theory. Known for their interesting take on an ANZAC biscuit, you must indulge in their ANZAC apple special. It quite literally tastes like an ANZAC biscuit exploded inside a warm fluffy muffin. It would be un-Australian not to give it a try...
Where: Shop 26 at Emporium on 1000 Ann Street in Fortitude Valley
Contact: 07 3854 0188

Cirque
Rebelling against the traditional fruit and cinnamon combo, Cirque serves up some amazingly unique combinations. Does Cherry Ripe or a tropical pineapple and coconut muffin tickle your fancy? Those who live on the wild side of life, make haste to this cosy café.
Where: 618 Brunswick Street in New Farm
Contact: 07 3254 0479

Saabi on Manson
The healthy muffin… If you’re keen to indulge but don’t want to suffer from food guilt for the rest of the day, get your morning pick-me-up from Saabi on Manson. Full of oatmeal, cranberries and other nutritional goodies, they are certainly not void of flavour.
Where: 116 Manson Road in Hendra

Planning to bake some muffins this weekend to take along to a potluck picnic. I'm a sucker for a classic blueberry muffin.. admittedly my version is wheat, sugar and dairy free!

But have you tried the muffins at Sisco in Spring Hill? Warm, crumbly, crunchy goodness, made in shop daily. Every time I enquire after the flavour as if it mattered - I wouldnt leave empty handed. Weather they are raspberry and vanilly, blueberry, lime and coconut or pear and pistachio I wish I ate them more slowly or grabbed 2. These should definatly be in the running for Brisbane's finest - but you have to bw quick, not matter how many trays are baked they still seem to be gone by the end of the morning rush!

I haven't. It's now my weekend mission. Pear and pistachio sounds amazing...

Ahhh the muffin. It's a small cake really. Delicious none the less.
